Environmental Sustainability

Environmental sustainability is a fundamental consideration as part of all current decision-making. The Health and Care Act 2022 means that the NHS is the first health system to embed net zero into legislation. This half-day session will consider how the NHS can deliver on this ambitious target.

We are pleased to confirm the following speakers:

Professor Peter Roberts, Professor Emeritus of Sustainable Spatial Development at the University of Leeds. Awarded an OBE in 2004 for services to regeneration and planning, Peter has held a number of roles nationally and locally and is internationally recognised for his work on sustainability. Peter plans to cover Sustainable Development: Why does it matter and how do you plan and implement for compliance?

Howard Gray and Pippa Greenwood, CGI. CGI were given a Gold Award in the Global Good Awards ‘Climate Action: Journey to Net Zero’ category. Pippa will talk about CGI’s initiatives which led to the award, focusing on employee engagement and motivation. Howard will talk about the work CGI is doing with clients (including NHS organisations) to support their journey to net zero.

Dr Helena Clements, Clinical Climate Lead and Consultant Paediatrician at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS FT. The Trust’s Climate Action team were shortlisted for the HSJ Environment Sustainability award in 2021. Helena will talk about the projects that led to the shortlisting and the further improvements made since.

Lynn Walker, Head of Sustainability, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS FT. The Trust has been shortlisted for the Towards Net Zero HSJ Award this year (Good Luck for the 17th November) and Lynn will provide an overview of some of the initiatives they have implemented and plans for the future (including supply chain).
